Evidence in practice
Research
Research grounds everything we practise. Dr. Poornima’s academic work focuses on how nutritional status is assessed, understood and acted upon — particularly in children and communities.
Doctoral research
During her doctoral research, Dr. Poornima developed and validated a nutritional risk assessment tool for children, strengthening her understanding of nutrition from a comprehensive, multidimensional perspective.

Trends of high fat, salt and sugar food consumption and its impact on nutritional status of school children
A study of 360 school children aged 6–16 found consumption of high fat, salt and sugar (HFSS) foods to be significantly high across both age groups. Younger children were more prone to undernutrition, while adolescents showed both undernutrition and overweight — the triple burden of malnutrition in one population. The paper argues for early screening of nutrient deficiencies and for building nutritional literacy among children, parents and caregivers.
